Description
The area between Schoenmakerskop and Summerstrand is called Driftsands due to the shifting by-pass sand dune that used to cover the area. The area was stabilised with exotic Australian wattles at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Much of the alien vegetation has now been cleared from the trail area allowing the indigenous fynbos vegetation to once more become established. Look out for the butterfly Thysbe’s Copper that reaches its easternmost limit here. In flight it has a blue hue, but appears orange at rest. Grey Mongoose, Yellow Mongoose and Grysbok may be seen. Keep a look out over the sea for whales on the return leg of the trail.
Highlights
A wonderful introduction to the fascinating fynbos biome, as well as the perfect opportunity to spot wildlife on land and in the ocean!
