About Calabash Tours

Calabash Tours was started in 1997 and was created to cater for tourists who wanted to experience true urban Africa where we could offer them the opportunity to visit townships and meet the locals. Our company is unusual in its approach to unlocking parts of the country often made inaccessible by ethical and safety concerns, and pre conceived ideas.

Steeped in responsible tourism and pro-poor tourism thinking, our ground breaking approach allows visitors to access, understand and appreciate the social history of the people, their day to day experiences of being black South Africans during apartheid, as well as during our emergence as a democracy. Our experiences are real, authentic, and ethical. Currently our township visits are the only tours that are accredited by Fair Trade Tourism South Africa. This guarantees the visitor that communities benefit, are involved in decision making, and are more than happy to welcome you to their communities.

Calabash Tours has also extended its tours to East London, where similar township experiences are offered. Being closer to the rural heart of the Eastern Cape, we also offer insightful visits to rural villages in the Eastern Cape, where our diverse and fascinating heritage can be accessed in a community beneficial way.

Calabash Tours is owned and operated by a young, dynamic team, who share a vision of tourism being a powerful development tool, while balancing the social needs of the poor with the desire by our visitors to have fun, to learn, and to engage with the South African people in an ethical way.

Responsible Tourism is tourism which:

• Minimises negative economic, environmental and social impacts
• Generates greater economic benefits for local people and enhances the well being of host communities
• Improves working conditions and access to the industry
• Involves local people in decisions that affect their lives and life chances
• Makes positive contributions to the conservation of natural and cultural heritage embracing diversity
• Provides more enjoyable experiences for tourists through more meaningful connections with local people, and a greater understanding of local cultural, social and environmental issues
• Provides access for physically challenged people
• Is culturally sensitive, encourages respect between tourists and hosts, and builds local pride and confidence

Addo Elephant Park & Other Game Experiences

The Eastern Cape is known for its excellent game viewing - boasting the Big 5 in their natural habitat. Addo offers South Africa's best viewing of elephant!

Addo Elephant National Park is situated 72km by road from Port Elizabeth. Established in 1931 to save 11 elephants on the brink of extinction, and now home to more than 350 of them, 280 Cape Buffalo, Black Rhino, a range of antelope species, as well as the rare flightless Dung Beetle, Addo Elephant Park is a perfect destination for the adventurous outdoor and nature lover.
We will also tailor-make a specific game reserve tour should you wish to experience any of the many available in the Eastern Cape.
