Description

The Baakens Valley is unique in that it is a 23 kilometre stretch of pure nature smack bang in the middle of the urban jungle of Port Elizabeth! Local MTB riders rate the contour paths and the jeep tracks as one of the best urban rides in South Africa. Expect rugged cliffs, little waterfalls and dense forestry to form part of your journey – so be prepared for some steep climbs and some interesting downhills, not to mention the odd obstacle or two to test your skills! However, most of the route follows grassy pathways or gravel tracks with river crossings here and there. NB:- the crossings may be impassable after rain.

The trail, which is well marked by concrete bollards with bicycle signs painted on them, runs along the Baakens River and enters the sea through the harbour – offering a wonderful variety of bird and animal life along the way, along with excellent examples of indigenous vegetation.
