An interactive dining experience!

Situated in the vibrant Stanley Street, Port Elizabeth, Buenos Restaurant celebrates its South American spirit by hosting , every second Sunday afternoon, a salsa dance class. At the slight altering of music, tables and the topping up of drinks, aspiring dancers are taught the steps at a bargain price of R40 per 1h 30 min session.

Restaurant Owner, Craig Holmes, who has been in the industry for over 20 years, thought of the unique concept after visiting a food market in Johannesburg where salsa dancing was taking place. He says: “Salsa dancing is not only an exciting way of bringing people together, but a form of entertainment that matches the overall feel of our restaurant, and that offers customers the opportunity to acquire or brush up on their dancing skills”

Experienced salsa instructor, Francois van Eck, describes salsa as a rebellious style of expression where teaching it socially has “kept his passion for salsa alive”. He acknowledges that: “There are a lot of people who are interested in learning how to salsa on a social basis, where there is much less pressure than in a competitive dance environment”.

Furthermore, he describes the lessons as “not putting you on the line and expressing yourself in front of strangers but rather an opportunity to relax because ultimately, music is food for the soul”. By joining Salsa Sunday, Francois says: “people can socialize and learn a skill at the same time. Without even realizing it, they are learning the skill of entertaining.”

Of those entertained are customers within the restaurant, who, at all ages, are encouraged to join in on the fun. A father, on a recent Sunday, dancing along with his baby daughter is the perfect example of this element! First year Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) BAS Architecture student, Jessie O’Brien, has been dancing for six years and says: “Dancing is about taking the first step and building on from there”. She advises fellow students to join salsa from a sporting perspective as it “is not as strenuous and time consuming as many other sports. During the week it is study study study but by taking a break and dancing on a Sunday afternoon you are allowing yourself to start off the week fresh and energized”.
