Tussle of the Joneses
The Jones sibling family domination of the Ocean Racing Series continues but this season the three brothers are certainly mixing things up. 19 year old Wayne Jones, Season 9 undefeated champion in the 2km Ocean Swim, has taken to the 1km Ocean Swim so far this season winning round 1 and placing 3rd in round 4 whilst youngest brother Daniel, who was the undefeated champion in the 1km ocean swim last season, has moved to the 2km ocean swim winning the first 2 rounds. Oldest brother Jason, Season 9 2km runner up, claimed his first win of the Series at round 4 two weeks ago just pipping Daniel on the line to improve on his 2nd place during round 3.
This Sunday sees the aQuellé Ocean Racing Series reaching it’s halfway stage with round 5 taking place at Hobie Beach and will be the last round for 2014 at the Series takes a little break before returning for round 6 on Sunday 4th January. Framesby scholar, Brigitte Muller, will be keen to continue her unbeaten run in the ladies 1km ocean swim in her first ever season of ocean swimming with strong challenges expected to come from Antonelle Saporta, Amy Mardon and Tammy Geyer whilst Kirsten Marriott leads the standings in the ladies 2km Ocean Swim having taken all the podium positions so far this season with a 1st in round 1, 3rd in round 3 and 2nd in round 4. She will expect strong competition from the consistent Rebecca Newman, Hannah Haswell and Liza Kingston.
The likes of Dylan Smith and Bradley Reen are keen to try and topple the Jones’ in the 2km ocean swim this Sunday whilst Ian Venter will be looking for his second win in the 1km swim to try and catch Series 1km leader Joshua Bellairs who has recorded a 3rd and two 2nds this season.
The aQuellé Ocean Racing Series also includes a 5km Beach Run and 5km Beach Walk whilst children 12 years and under get to enjoy their own 1km Beach Run/Walk and prize giving on the morning. Registration and late entries for round 5 opens at 7.30am at Hobie Beach on Sunday morning with racing starting at 9am and followed by the medal presentations and lucky draw prize giving which includes a feature prize of R1,000 cash.
