Youngsters Dominate Ocean Series
Whilst Port Elizabeth’s unique aQuellé Ocean Racing Series™ is attracting participants of all ages to the beachfront on alternate Sunday mornings, it’s the young brigade who are starting to dominate. The Series, which comprises of 6 events on each race day morning throughout summer, is the only family event of its kind on the African continent and has already attracted participants as young as 2 years old and as mature as 83 years of age this season.
It was 13 year old Clarendon Park Primary School scholar Samantha Perelson who headed the youth onslaught at round 3 last Sunday morning winning the ladies 5km Beach Run from 13 year old Saskia Wait and 15 year old Ntandokazi Baxana. 15 year old Dylan Finlay claimed his 3rd victory of the Series in the Men’s 5km Beach Run with teenagers Likhaya Rooi (16) and Siyanda Jacobs (17) placing 3rd and 4th respectively.
In the 1km Ocean Swim ladies division it was 16 year old Brigitte Muller from Framesby High School who won her 2nd gold medal of the season ahead of 16 year old Amy Mardon whilst in the Men’s 1km Ocean Swim Wayne Jones (19 yrs) claimed gold ahead of 17 year old Joshua Bellairs and Robert Masterton. The teens also dominated in the 2km Ocean Swim with 17 year old Daniel Jones winning ahead of his 22 year old brother, Jason, and 16 year old Dylan Smith in 3rd place whilst in the ladies category seasoned open water swimmer and mom of three Tracy Gous (38 years) held off the challenge from 14 year old Hannah Haswell and 18 year old Kirsten Marriott.
