NMB Duathlon Race Goes Off-Road
The Nelson Mandela Bay duathlon will take place at an all-new venue this weekend where it will present an exciting challenge for competitors.
The one-off duathlon race, which forms part of the triathlon winter series, will take place at the Nelson Mandela University where athletes will be tested in their off-road abilities. The race will move away from the usual tarred roads and smooth services when athletes venture into the university nature reserve for a rare opportunity to experience the natural beauty which it has to offer.
The change of venue and the new conditions which athletes will be facing are all in an attempt to breathe life into a discipline which goes somewhat unsupported in the Nelson Mandela Bay region. “With the event taking place in an utterly unique place like the NMU nature reserve it will hopefully attract new people who did not previously consider taking part in a duathlon”, said event organiser, Michael Zoetmulder. “This event and the upcoming triathlon in August offers triathletes the opportunity to further their training for the People’s Triathlon in September”. The People’s Triathlon to which Zoetmulder refers is a new initiative by Nelson Mandela Bay Triathlon to give all in the province an opportunity to partake in a high-quality event which is hosted along a world renown route. “By offering a variety of events which build up to a large event like the People’s Triathlon it will increase the number of people taking part and hopefully develop those young talents we have within our province” added Zoetmulder.
The duathlon race which starts at 9 o clock on Sunday morning will have an option of a 5km run, 20km cycle and 2.5km sprint or a 2.5km run, 10km cycle and 1.25km super sprint. This makes is the perfect opportunity for youngsters to try out the sport or for those season campaigners to work on their speed and form for their next big race.
Discounted entry rate of R100 for the super sprint category and R200 for the sprint category will be available online while on the day entries will increase by R100. Prize giving for the NMB duathlon race will be held right after the final competitors crosses the finish line where some fantastic lucky draws will be awarded to those in attendance. With the opportunity to test yourself against the competition, the NMB Duathlon race will be one to watch on Sunday.
