Partnership with purpose
The partnership between Genergy and Woodridge College is expanding. Recently Genergy designed and installed the solar solution seen on the roofs of many of the school’s buildings. “Woodridge benefits from a bespoke solar PV system, spanning nine different building clusters across the school campus,” remarks Genergy CEO, Terry Billson. “The school is able to reduce its CO2 emissions by roughly 597 tons per annum, while simultaneously reducing its expenditure on municipal electricity. By supporting the trail run on the grounds of the school, Genergy is able to reinforce the value of being eco-concious and eco-friendly.”

As part of the low waste, low carbon theme of the event, Genergy is planning to give away hundreds of young spekboom plants to trail run participants. Due to its use of two of the three types of photosynthesis, Spekboom (Portulacaria afra) is considered one of the world’s best carbon sequestering plants. Spekboom thicket is estimated to fix upwards of ten times as much carbon as an area of tropical rainforest of the same size. Fortunately it is indigenous to the Eastern Cape.

Woodridge launched Eco Smart in 2018, with the aim of becoming a leading eco-school in South Africa. Talking about the initiative, Headmaster of Woodridge College, Derek Bradley says, “We believe that it is vital to teach responsible energy practices to the next generation of our country’s leaders, and in doing so, foster environmental stewardship practically and tangibly. Our approach allows us to lead by example and assist the country in alleviating the strain on the municipal grid.”
