4th round of the Nelson Mandela Bay’s aQuellé Ocean Racing
Favourable weather saw hundreds of people from around the country taking to Hobie Beach on Sunday morning to contest the 4th round of the Nelson Mandela Bay’s aQuellé Ocean Racing Series™ and enjoying the 6 events on offer on the morning.
As anticipated, 15 year old Dylan Finlay managed to snatch his 4th successive win in the 5km Beach Run, but this didn’t come without a strong tussle with silver medalist Frederik Jantjies with Siphamandla Swartbooi claiming the bronze. In the ladies 5km Beach Run it was 12 year old Megan Snyman who secured the gold medal from seasoned runner Johannette Oosthuizen who has just returned from competing in the New York marathon. Deidre Langeveld placed 3rd behind Oosthuizen on the run.
Enjoying the flat sea conditions, most swimmers managed to improve their times on previous weeks and in the aQuellé 1km Ocean Swim it was once again the ladies Series leader Brigitte Muller who claimed line honours ahead of Amy Mardon and Cape Town visitor Jessica Ashley-Cooper whilst Ian Venter won his first Ocean Racing Series title of the season in the Men’s division from Joshua Bellairs with round 3 winner Wayne Jones slipping to 3rd place. In the 2km swim it was a close call with Jason Jones just out sprinting his younger brother Daniel for honours this week with Bradley Reen in 3rd place.
Milé Vermaak extends her overall lead in the 5km Beach Run with another victory ahead of Emily Stemmett and Michelle Geel whilst Juan Slabbert added another gold to his collection in the Men’s division ahead of Colin Korkie and Johan Ferreira. In the 3km Stand up Paddle category Marc Jones won from Michael Klos and Mia Vorster as the ever increasing field of stand up paddlers got to enjoy their best conditions of the season.
With over 100 kids taking part in the aQuellé Kids 1km Beach Run, it was Aiden Joubert and Tayla Wilson who won the 6 and under category with Kai Whitaker and Abbie Mitchell taking the 7-8 year gold medals. Matthew Loon and Rebecca Mardon won the 9-10 year category whilst Aidan Finlay and Kayla Ferreira won the under 12 category.
