Project Nelson Mandela Bay Connecting Job Seekers
This initiative, under the auspices of Project Nelson Mandela Bay (PNMB), a private, good citizenship programme, manned by a group of Citizens, on a completely voluntary basis, and a financial partnership with Ezethu Trust… is going to be able to offer an online job portal to those school leavers, as well as unemployed citizens, who have been unable to access what the short term job market has on hand… due to limited or non-existent internet connection to allow them to search for opportunities in the market by making use of our Free Wi-Fi. We will also be providing Maths and Science support to Grades 8 to 12s through a tablet-based Learning platform.
Through the Connected City Task Team, of PNMB, the following is currently in operation:
Free Wi-Fi. Free Wi-Fi has been installed, at the Masifunde Youth Development premises, in Walmer Township – a recognised NGO that was established in 2003. Amobia Communications, headed by Nicola Smith, installed the free Wi-Fi, recently, and The Code Group, headed by Devereaux Joubert partnered with them
eLearning Platform: With its academic support activities, Masifunde tries to remedy challenges some learners face within South Africa’s education system, which result from lack of resources in schools and homes, lack of individual and adequate attention as well as from lack of parental support. Their activities therefore focus on high-quality academic support both individually as well as for groups, provision of the basic needs and well-being of each individual as well as provision of excellent resources both through study space and study material. This has now been bolstered by PNMB providing Android Tablets with an eLearning Platform that allows scholars to learn Maths and Science from Grades 8 to 12, along with being able to translate this into several African languages to make it easier for all to understand.
Job Portal: Masifunde’s core programme, a holistic life-skills training for school-going learners of Walmer Township, prepares its participants already at an early age for a future career through soft skills, academic support, individual aptitude assessments, career guidance and personal development, Masifunde’s Out-of-School-Youth Centre (moosyc!) works with all those young people in the township community who did not find employment after finishing high school or dropping out of the formal schooling system. This will now be supported by an online job portal that has been developed by The Code Group… whereby the target market is able to register, for free; list their skills set/s and then wait to see whether a prospective Employer is then interested and sets in motion the networking process of interview/ decision/employment! The predominant employment genre will be short term hire, within the citrus, security arenas…and similar and will be monitored/managed by an Eastern Cape Firm, Work4All. This is a First for the city, and we are proud to acknowledge that the development and the management have been set up by local Firms!
In order to fully support the above learning and job portals, the PNMB team has managed to source the required Laptops and Tablets. VW donated 11 laptops to assist us in achieving our goals in this initiative.
It is to be noted that both Joubert and Smith are part of the PNMB Team. For further information, please contact: Devereaux Joubert: djoubert@thecodegroup.co.za or Nicola Smith: nicola@amobia.com
