A Meal for a Meal reaches South Africa
Romy Foods® has expanded its global food programme, “A Meal for A Meal” to South Africa.
Supported by the Romy Foods HUB in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, this initiative will provide meals to children in need to a soup kitchen and to a community centre in Jacksonville and Timothy Valley area of Port Elizabeth.
Since June 2016, the “A Meal for a Meal” programme has been instrumental in providing more than 2000 meals a day to children attending primary schools in Uganda. The launch of the new Romy Foods HUB in South Africa presented an opportunity to expand and reach children in the Jacksonville area who can benefit from this programme.
Twice a week, A Meal for a Meal offers help and support to a soup kitchen run by the local community church Ebenezer North by funding meals. This is a place that welcomes children to get a good nutritious meal in order to help them develop healthier bodies. This helps them battle any diseases that are common in the area as well as focus on their education. It also helps to feed adults who are on strong medication and the elderly that have been neglected or even abused. With this project in place, A Meal for a Meal will sponsor meals for 1700 children and adults every month.
This initiative provides support to some of the most vulnerable and economically disadvantaged members of the local community. It helps parents provide for their children and offers them a safe and nourishing environment where they can grow and dedicate their time to their studies. With South Africa being added to the A Meal for a Meal portfolio, the global food programme expects to have provided over 2,000,000 meals by the end of the year, since its inception in June 2016.
“A Meal for a Meal has done some extraordinary work for children in Uganda in the last few years and we’re delighted the programme agreed to our request to expand to South Africa,” said Kenneth Wahlberg, the managing director of Romy Foods South Africa. “As we prepared to launch the Romy Foods HUB in South Africa, we felt it was vital to find opportunities where A Meal for a Meal could help those in need here at home, since it is at the core of our business objectives along with reducing food waste and contributing to a more responsible and sustainable food service industry.”
“The success we have seen in Uganda has only strengthened our commitment to reducing famine in
Africa by transferring the savings our network delivers to Africa to where it is so desperately,” said Rickard Gillblad, CEO of Romy Foods Corporation. “Thanks to the South African HUB, new paths and opportunities have opened where we can contribute. As long as there continues to be a hungry child in Africa, we will keep striving to reach out through A Meal for a Meal”.
