Nigel the African Harrier Hawk
Meet Nigel …
We are so happy and excited to announce the arrival of Nigel, the Harrier Hawk. He is amazing and extremely interesting.
The males and females look similar even though the female is slightly bigger. The young Harrier Hawks are brown and have black on the face. The adults have yellow patches on the face; which flushes red when they are excited.
An unusual trait of this species is the double-jointed knees it has. With this ability is can reach into holes and cracks of inaccessible birds such as barbets, woodhoopoes to prey on fledglings.
The Harrier Hawk is Omnivorous, eating fruit, rodents and small vertebrates.
When they nest they lay one to three eggs which hatch within about 35 days.
We are extremely lucky to have Nigel become part of our family.
Hope to see you soon,
Jeru
