Animals in Wonderland welcome new additions
Meet Bob and Mary!
Animals in Wonderland are very excited to announce the new addition of their male & female Fiddler Crabs to their ever-growing animal family!
Fiddler Crabs come from muddy beaches in West Africa…ours came from one of the Aquariums in Port Elizabeth.
They are also known as the Calling Crab and form members of the Ocypodidae family. Males have one larger claw where females have two small claws.
Crabs shed their shell as they grow; which is also known as molting.
Should a crab lose a leg or claw, this would grow back with the next molt. When they molt they are very soft so they hide until the shell is hard.
In captivity they live up to 3 years where they only live up to 2 years in the wild.
Very sweet to watch as they use their claws to wave and do signals.
The females prefer the male with the biggest claw, ensuring a proper size burrow for reproduction…so with them size really does matter!
