Mixed emotions about Polycarb
Polycarbonate burglar bars have now been around for a couple of years and as with all products a public opinion has been formed – some of it based on fact, some of it on emotion. False information has misled many on both sides of the spectrum, so let’s get some clarity around some of the popular misconceptions:
- Polycarb is like Perspex. The two materials may look and feel similar, but polycarb can absorb far more impact and unlike Perspex will not shatter if hit by a hammer or by bending.
- Polycarb is stronger than steel. Not true, as a material steel is stronger and requires more force to bend and ultimately break. However, a 40 x 6 mm piece of polycarb is roughly as strong as a 9 mm diameter steel rod.
- Polycarb burglar bars are easily kicked out. This has less to do with the material and more to do with the number of and quality of anchoring points used. Individually mounted bars are susceptible to kicking attacks, whereas framed systems with multiple anchoring points can withstand even the most vicious kicking attacks.
- Polycarb can’t be cut with a saw. Unfortunately, as with steel and aluminium, polycarb can be cut with a hacksaw. The larger the piece of polycarb used the longer it will take to cut through.
