Vilia Offerman, a quiet lady, who has for many decades been inspired to document her surroundings through the depiction of Port Elizabeth’s architecture and rural surrounds in mostly watercolours. Her love for doorways of Central is legend. Her ability to remain accurate and true to the architecture as well as a creative flair with light and colour make her work particularly attractive to the appreciator of realistic painting. It takes a special discipline in an artist to pursue accuracy and Vilia is well versed in both her medium and subject matter.
In more recent years she has explored the idea of composite works that comprise of a series of studies within a given theme of landscape or architecture Lately she has afforded herself ‘room to play’ in abstractions created with mixed media.
According to Offerman “ finding the magic in a special moment and wanting to capture it, and share it with others in the form of a painting, is for me what it is all about.” A hardworking artist who started out with a smattering of art education while still at school in her last three years at the old Holy Rosary Convent in PE, has certainly inspired many others to understand that it takes serious commitment to one’s vocation as an artist and to keep aspiring to a high standard of making good art.
