Whales spotted in Keurboomstrand
The Southern Right whales were beautifully captured by Plett local, Berna Euler in Keurboomstrand on 02 September 2020.
Spotting one of these magnificent mammals is always a magical experience and capturing the experience is indeed a delight.
Here are some interesting facts about these gentle giants of the ocean:
- The Southern Right whale is noted as one of the largest of its species. The average length of a male is 13 to 15 meters and the average female is about 16 meters, weighing around 40 tons.
- The characteristic calluses (elevated skin on different parts of the head) on a southern right whale function like fingerprints, identifying a whale throughout its life.
- They are calm and quite slow when swimming, reaching maximum speeds of 9 to 11 km / h. They communicate by jumping and splashing their fins in the water.
- They are known to be quite curious and playful when they are close to humans.
- They can live to be 100 years old.
- The South Right whale feeds mainly on small fish and krill.
A big thank you to Berna Euler for sharing.
