Salt River Mouth Hiking Trail, Nature’s Valley

Salt River Mouth Hiking TrailSalt River Mouth Hiking Trail (5 kms, 2 hours) is the perfect balance between coastal bush, river estuary and shoreline. A short walk along the beautiful Nature’s Valley beach takes you to the start of the trail. After a steep climb to the saddle of the hill, a rewarding view over the sea and village below will provide a great photo opportunity.

The saddle will eventually give way to a fairly sharp drop through the coastal bush, down to the Salt River estuary, but the path is well-maintained with log steps. You will emerge at the sandy river estuary – a good spot for refreshment or swimming. Walk back along the beach either to the starting point at the shop or to the lagoon and mouth of the Grootrivier.

Some of the special features to look out for on this hike:

  • This trail is very rich in wildlife – watch out for spoor of bush pig and bush buck, Cape clawless otter, and many birds, including white heron, kingfishers and fish eagles.
  • Impressive flora that includes very old, tall fynbos such as 30+ year-old Proteas, and statuesque forest species like Candlewood, False Saffron and Keur.
