Plettenberg Conservation and Development Coalesce
Creating a harmonious partnership between conservation and development
The delicate dance between development and environmental health has faced its challenges, but Plettenberg Bay is navigating these obstacles to demonstrate that “responsible tourism” can indeed coexist with progress.
The natural allure of the region has prompted Plettenberg Bay to actively break down traditional barriers between business owners and conservationists, fostering a shared understanding. This concerted effort is yielding positive results, establishing Plettenberg Bay as a leader in developing a sustainable tourism economy. Several factors contribute to this success.
While Plett Tourism’s commitment to sustainability predates the town’s current tourism initiative, the “It’s a feeling” brand, emphasizing inclusivity across Bitou communities, distinguishes Plettenberg Bay’s tourism office.
The town is fortunate to host a cadre of dedicated businessmen and women committed to finding sustainable solutions for environmental preservation, alongside determined conservationists collaborating with officials to safeguard the environment during development.
Notable achievements include hospitality institutions pledging to reduce single-use plastics, with the Fat Fish, an award-winning SASSI-accredited restaurant, setting the trend with responsibly sourced seafood endorsed by WWF-SA.
Tourism operators have received accolades for their efforts, such as Offshore Adventures achieving Blue Flag Boat status and Plett’s recognition as one of only eight Whale Heritage Sites worldwide. Bitou Municipality has maintained six Blue Flag Beaches for the 2023/2024 season, reflecting their commitment to responsible tourism, particularly concerning beaches, contributing to Plettenberg Bay’s nearly pristine shoreline year-round.
The Coastal Impact Program, developed by the Nature’s Valley Trust and its stakeholders, aims to mitigate human impacts on coastal biodiversity. The #ShareTheShores program, an educational initiative, encourages responsible beach use and coexistence with biodiversity. The public is urged to heed nesting area signs and respect zoned areas, ensuring the protection of beach breeding birds.
Research and surveys on bird breeding and dog walking habits have led Bitou Municipality to implement a dog zoning system on beaches. Color-coded zone boards indicate leash rules, allowing responsible dog owners to enjoy designated areas while providing dog-free zones for other beachgoers. This initiative ensures a balance between canine enjoyment and the protection of beach breeding birds negatively impacted by dog presence.
