How to cope with Baboons in the Western Cape
In terms of the Nature Conservation Ordinance, animals are protected if they are listed in Schedule 2 to the Ordinance or in Appendix II of CITES. Baboons are not listed in Schedule 2 of the Ordinance, but are listed in Appendix II of CITES. Therefore, they are classified as protected wild animals in the Western Cape.

Baboons on the Cape Peninsula – A guide for residents and visitors
A Facebook group Baboon Forum – Plettenberg Bay offers a forum where residents and visitors can share experiences, seek advice and learn more about living with their primate neighbours.
There are a few members that are experts in the field of primates, not only Chacma Baboons but also other primates that are found in our area, namely Vervet Monkeys.
Members share photos, videos and their experiences, positive or negative so that all members can benefit from the forum. The aim is to gather information regarding the habits of the local troops and how to address any problems. Posts cover understanding behaviour, body language, general info on what constitutes a healthy troop, what challenges are faced by baboons in an increasingly urbanised environment and more.
