Harkerville Hiking Trail, Plettenberg Bay

Harkerville Hiking Trail

The Harkerville Trail near Plettenberg Bay is a true challenge to any serious hiker. Set in a spectacular combination of indigenous forest, coastal cliffs and pebble strewn beaches, this hike is a worthy rival of the Otter Trail for scenery, and ranks as one of the best two-day trails in Southern Africa. Photographic opportunities abound and you may even surprise an otter!

Any candidate for this hike must be fit and not suffer from vertigo. An experienced hiker should form part of the group, which cannot be larger than 12 people. A certain amount of rock climbing is involved and narrow ledges have to be negotiated; stormy seas and high tides must be kept in mind. Stepladders and chains assist at dangerous places. Rocky and unstable paths make a walking stick a useful aid.

The hike begins from the Harkerville Hut at the Harkerville Forestry Station (Harkerville is signposted off the N2 between Plett and Knysna) and ends at the Sinclair Hut on day one. Day 2, even more spectacular than day one, brings you back to the starting point.

Booking must be done through the Department of Forestry in Knysna (044) 382 5466
