Dynamo behind ‘Plett it’s a feeling’
Patty Butterworth, the driving force behind the success of the resort town’s tourism, is a well-known figure in Plett. As the CEO of Plett Tourism, she may be petite in stature, but her impact on the town is immense.
During my walks with Butterworth through Plett, I’ve witnessed the constant greetings and inquiries from people in various establishments – restaurants, bookshops, clothing stores, you name it. Her advice, support, and ideas are sought after, and she handles every query from the media industry with a prompt and ever-present smile.
This year brought unexpected challenges, including the sudden loss of her husband, Grant. Despite personal hardships, Butterworth remains positive, emphasizing the importance of a supportive network of family, friends, and colleagues.
Navigating through the post-pandemic recovery, Butterworth highlights challenges faced by the tourism industry, including scams and economic constraints. Yet, she remains dedicated to maintaining the integrity of Plett’s town and brand.
With almost 30 years in the tourism industry and a decade with Plett Tourism, Butterworth finds the work extremely rewarding. She focuses on destination marketing, management, and innovative projects like the Plett Trail App, iKasi Life video series, and the Plett Ocean Festival.
Her commitment extends to engaging with key stakeholders, tour operators, and travel professionals, making sure Plett continues to be a vibrant and appealing destination. Whether it’s the release of rehabilitated penguins, various Plett festivals, or championing smaller businesses, Butterworth is at the forefront.
Born in Monterey, California, and with a diverse background, Butterworth’s journey led her to a Bachelor of Arts degree in political journalism and advertising. Her varied work experience includes law-firm marketing, non-profit organizations, and writing for national and international publications.
Since joining Plett Tourism in 2013, Butterworth has played a crucial role, initially as a media and public relations consultant and later taking on the CEO position in October 2020. Her highlights include growing Blue Flag beaches, introducing Green Flag walks, and Plett being recognized as a Whale Heritage Site.
Passionate about sustainability, Butterworth focuses on protecting the environment, marine life, and wildlife in Plett. Initiatives like the Plett Shark Action Group and Plett Ocean Smart demonstrate her commitment to safety and conservation.
Despite the challenges, Butterworth’s dedication to tourism is evident. With a watchful eye during the busy holiday season, she ensures Plett remains vibrant. Outside work, she enjoys creative outlets like writing, pottery, dancing, and hiking, emphasizing a balanced life.
Butterworth encourages creating special memories, reflecting on cherished moments, and fostering kindness and grace in difficult times. Her best-kept secrets in Plett include early morning coffee at Robberg Nature Reserve, full moon beach walks, toasting the sunset at Keurbooms Beach, and spotting dwarf chameleons in her garden.
