Diepwalle Forest – Petrus-Se-Brand Mountain Bike Trail
Description
The Petrus-se-Brand mountain bike trail is a one-way trail that can be done from either the Diepwalle Forest Station or Garden of Eden between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay on the N2. The recommended direction is, however, from north to south (i.e. Diepwalle to Garden-of-Eden); it is slightly easier, due to the fall in elevation
The Diepwalle Forest station is the highest point on the route, which means more downhills and therefore suited to the ‘beginner mountain biker’. Keep an eye out for route markers that are visible from this side.
Starting from Diepwalle: the ride starts at the Diepwalle Forest Station office, which is just off the Uniondale Road (R339) and approximately 22km from Knysna.
After a short descent from the Diepwalle Forest Station office, the route breaks away to the left, at 2.8km from the start, keep a lookout for the route markers that are on the left. For just over a kilometer the track follows the contoured bed of the old narrow-gauge forest railway line which used to run from Ysterhoutrug to Knysna. You will reach the Petrusbrandpad T-junction turn left and begin a 2.5km descent to the Petrusbrand River. Once you over the river, the winding ascent toward the Petrusbrand Eiland starts, this climb is well contoured and can be taken quite comfortably.
This section of the route is absolutely beautiful with medium-moist to dry type forest. Many old yellowwoods are crowned with “Old man’s beard”. The contrast of terrain is amazing, after riding beneath the forest canopy for approximately 10km and then you suddenly out into the open.
Kleineiland is a perfect resting point if you riding on a clear day the view over the Tsitsikamma Mountains and Plettenberg Bay in the distance is truly spectacular.
If you have to break or carry on, you will ride back into the forest and will begin the winding descent into the Kleineiland River Valley. Take care in this section as the road surface is fairly cobbled. Once you reached the bottom, you will cross a small low-water bridge. This is the lowest point on the route at 180 meters above sea-level and signals the start of a fairly severe climb. The next 4km you will gain 190 meters in altitude.
At approximately 17.6km the trail will T-in with the Fisantehoek road, you will need to turn right here. Follow this road all the way to the N2 between Knysna and Garden of Eden (turn left to Garden of Eden). Or alternatively at approximately 1.2km after reaching the T-junction, the road forks a path off to the left, this is about 3.4km of mostly single fast track and is the most exhilarating part of the course. You will also come out on the N2 between Knysna and Garden of Eden (turn left to Garden of Eden).
