ORCA Foundation

You protect that which you love

The Orca Foundation, a marine and coastal conservation organization initiative was started by Ocean Blue adventures under the leadership of Tony Lubner and Marc Valentine in 2000. At this time Plettenberg Bay was experiencing a lot of illegal foreign fishing.

The initial start up in Allianz with Cape Nature was to do more boat based patrols to implement and enforce legislation on these fishing companies and with great success. Thereafter, with the help of Rhodes University, ORCA Foundation developed into a full-on Marine and coastal conservation program in order to get together a coastal management plan for the Bay. As we all know research and conservation needs a lot of funding, and in order to keep head above water financially, ORCA Foundation implemented a volunteer program. This program not only funds most of the Foundation now, but also gives people from all over the world the opportunity to do their little bit, with or without experience, to make the world a better place, not only for us now, but also for future generation to come.

The Program also creates awareness, by emphasizing the expression:

“In the end, we conserve only that which we love. We love only that which we understand, and we only understand that which we are taught.” Baba Dioum, a Senegalese ecologist.

Orca foundation to date has formed partnerships with Rhodes University, Centre of Dolphin studies, WWF, Qolweni Township and Ocean Blue Planet Green.
