A big thank you – Differently-Abled Awareness Campaign
It is with great gratitude that I say thank you on behalf of the Differently-Abled Awareness Campaign to the Councillors who are making Marine Drive wheel-chair, crutch and walker friendly.
We have noticed that the lowering of the curbs have almost all been completed so that it will be safe and possible for the Differently-Abled to make their to the Clinic, Medical Centre and town from the N2. This request was made in March 2018 and we have seen ACTION!!
Councillor Dave Swart accompanied us this week on an inspection tour of the entire Main Street to see what could be done to make it more wheelchair-friendly and we sincerely believe that upgrading will be noticeable shortly, starting with the clearing of the pavements of bins, sandwich boards and overgrown verges. Zebra crossings and further disable parking areas also more noticeable.
Thank you Councillors and all those who are truly trying to make a difference.
Disable Parking signs should be taking place in due course. The placement of public restrooms, also gym and play-to-learn satellite parks were discussed and awareness of the need has been created.
What is still most disturbing is the fact that there is no ramp at the Post Office, surely as a Government Department serving the public this should be a priority?
Think of all the elderly pensioners who have to collect their meagre pensions but need assistance down a staircase – in many cases after walking all the way to town. We believe that this a real travesty of the rights of our citizens. Any suggestions on how we can get this fixed?
Once we are satisfied that Plett is truly wheelchair friendly then we can move to the next step – to host annual sports events for the differently-abled. Every sport imaginable can take place here, especially for the children.
We have it all, we just need to stop the, “someone else will get involved, we are OK Joe” attitude and really ask, what can I do today to help just one person feel good and for someone who is “different,” be they vision impaired, have loss of hearing, struggle to do their shopping, whatever, look around you and see, how good is good enough?
