Wittedrift (Stofpad) Primêr refurbishment of Playground
The Bitou 10 Foundation nominated the Wittedrift (Stofpad) Primêr School playground as the 67 minutes for Mandela’s Day Project on the 18th July 2019.
The playground has been in dire need of a refurbish and this was a great way to bring smiles to our Bitou primary school learners on behalf of Nelson Mandela.
In preparation for the big day, Bitou 10 Foundation Manager, Sooneela Naina, and staff, Madeleen Janse van Vuuren and Delnay Terblanche, spent three days scraping off the old paint, sandpapering and then adding primer to all the playground equipment. They were assisted by the school’s maintenance staff and two gardeners, whose services were offered for the morning.
On Mandela Day, folk from across Plettenberg Bay donated their 67 minutes to help with the final phase of painting the playground equipment, in the cheerful colours of red, green, blue and yellow.
It turned out to be a beautiful day as everyone added their special touch to the new look.
“Thank you, Bitou 10 Foundation and all the volunteers for helping the school with the refurbishing of the play area. It is now safe, clean and pretty and the children have the opportunity to develop their fitness levels and enjoy their playtime,” said principal, Mr Peter Chalmers.
A big thank you goes out to the following volunteers:
Allister Windwogel; Eric Mentoor; Lionel Kamfer; Donovan Kamfer; Rubin Andrew; Kristel Vandenschneck; Jayme Wilderman; Kim Fichardt; Brov Prudence Pieterse; Fresonia Pillay; Wildene Van Rooyen; Paul Van Hoof; Kathy Terblanche; Miila Kauppinen and
And a big thank you to their sponsors for supporting their initiative:
Dulux Paint Center; Robberg Quarry.
“The preparation stage was quite a challenge, however now that the entire project is complete it feels wonderful to have brought some well-needed cheerfulness to the playground. Children will get to enjoy this space for years to come,” says a very impressed Bitou 10F manager, Sooneela Naina.
About Mandela Day
Nelson Mandela International Day is celebrated in honour of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on the 18 July.
The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first UN Mandela Day held on 18 July 2010.
Since its launch in 2009 Nelson Mandela International Day has enjoyed 10 years of global support and solidarity.
This year the Nelson Mandela Foundation launched a new Mandela Day strategy, titled: Mandela Day: The Next Chapter, to mark the tenth anniversary of the initiative. In the next 10 years, they aim to mobilise people, governments, civil society, and corporates to focus on 5 areas: education and literacy, food and nutrition, shelter, sanitation and active citizenship.
