How we came about

In 2006 Beauty Lukwe noticed a lot of neglected, abused and abandoned children in her neighbourhood.
She took 2 such children into her care and transformed her house into a ‘safe home’.

At that stage she was staying in a home in an informal settlement and in March 2009, she was given an RDP house. Although it was smaller it had running cold water, a toilet and a basin.
Recently a geyser was donated and for the first time in these children’s lives, they could have a warm shower.
There are seven children in Beauty’s ‘safe home’, none of whom had been previously attending school.
They are all happy and settled down and they are attending crèche or Primary schools.

My home is their home

My home is their home

A typical day would consist of getting the children up, giving them breakfast and making sure that they get to school on time. When the children come home they have lunch, help with a few household chores, do their homework then play. They all have to be back in by 5pm so they can have their shower then dinner. Bed time is 8pm, this routine has given them a firm grounding for a stable life, where they feel loved and cared for.

There are a set of house rules:

• Washing hands before meals

• Keeping their bedroom tidy

• Treating eachother with love and respect

• No bad language

• Always letting an adult know where they are going

• Never talk to strangers

• Never letting anyone touch their private parts These rules give the children a sense of belonging which they have never had before.

The children came from broken homes, some of the parents were either alcoholics or in jail. Before Beauty took them in they were on the streets smoking, sniffing glue and scrounging for food and warmth. Beauty’s goal is to expand her home to be able to take more children in need and to have the financial resources necessary to provide for them.
