Kids of Kurland
These children deserve a good start in life and we appeal to all to assist us in this task
Kurland village is a rural township in the Crags area on the edge of the Tsitsikamma Nature Reserve, 20 km from Plettenberg Bay, South Africa.
Due to the remoteness of the village, there is a high incidence of unemployment, therefore leading to problems with alcoholism, HIV and domestic violence.
In addition to this the local primary school has been allocated too few teachers for the number of children now attending this school.

Constant support is necessary for this project to continue...
The Kids Of Kurland School Project
was established in 2001 to help the children of this community and has been raising funds over the years be able to employ up to 20 additional teachers, including special needs teachers, social workers and life skills facilitators.
The Crags Primary School was built in 1981 and is the only school in Kurland Village. There are approximately 650 pupils speaking both Afrikaans and Xhosa from Grade 1 to 9. There are so few teachers allocated to this school by the Dept of Education, resulting in some classes having up to 90 pupils per class!
The quality of education was therefore affected and children were leaving school at 14 or 15, ill prepared for modern living. Since Kids of Kurland have introduced the additional teachers the classes are down to an average of 35 – 47 per class.
Although this is much better, it is still inadequate for improved learning. Smaller classes produce better results and social problems can be identified and addressed.
Life skills education presented to date have included topics such as empowerment, functional behaviour, capacity building and coping skills. Programs introduced include child safety, resources for life, pride project, outdoor life skills and AIDS education. Through the AIDS education being instituted, the concept of children educating their own parents on the issues is being introduced through joint home work books.
The results on overall input have been monitored and there has been great progress and a marked difference in atmosphere made with the children, staff and parents in social as well as educational issues that were affecting the community.
Even though there have been great achievements, continued support is necessary for this project to continue.

We are delighted that we now have our own website Kids of Kurland and our main project at the moment is to use this as a tool to raise the profile and gain more support.
There are opportunities for companies to have links directly to their website and to sponsor a teacher or even a sports team.

Why Support Us
Apart from the excessively large classes in some Grades, many of these children do not have supportive parents. Many are illiterate and some are abusive alcoholics. There is a high number of alcohol syndrome learners. Sexual Abuse and teenage pregnancy is common in the area.
Improving the educational opportunities and social coping skills in this community can enable a learner to free themselves from their poverty trap.
