Good Season for Tenikwa
Tenikwa Awareness Centre Educates the Holiday Children at Natures Valley
The Tenikwa team headed off to Natures Valley Holiday Day Camp on the 22nd December 2010 to host an exciting Penguin & Wild Cat Awareness Program for the children.
Mandy started the program by introducing the children to one of our Penguins and proceeded to educate them about how to ‘rescue’ any Penguins found on our local beaches. Thereafter our trainee guide & field student, Nola-Mari, further educated the children about the threats of confronting the Wild cats of South Africa
2010 festive season was good – May 2011 continue to show growth
Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre had a good Festive Season and figures were up on last year. The program which has had the greatest popularity is our Sunrise and Sunset Cheetah Walk. As we only take 6 to 8 guests on these walks, bookings have to be made in advance, some made from Abroad months in advance.
Our hourly Wild Cat Experience continues to draw visitors who have an opportunity to interact close up and personal with our variety of South African Indigenous Wild Cats
Bibi our baby seal moves in for the long haul
This Cape Fur Baby Seal – was washed up on the beach and has to be cared for until he is old enough to be put back with the colony. He eats very well and is growing.
Getting his formula right was very difficult as he is Lactose intolerant. We found that his system agreed with Soya formula. Luckily we managed to sourced this formula from a supplier at a discounted rate. He will be with us for about a year before he can be put back with a colony.
Rehabilitation news
Tenikwa’s Rehabilitation Centre has been really busy over the last year with an influx of Penguin’s and lots of injured or abandoned Wildlife. Our Rehabilitation Centre is quite unique in that we accept Marine as well as Terrestrial animals and birds. Of the 260 creatures admitted in 2010, we treated a variety of species such as Duikers, Blacked backed Jackal pups, Caracal Cubs, Bat Eared Foxes, a Pole Cat which we nicknamed “Domino”, Brown Hooded Kingfishers, Knysna Loeries, Black backed Gulls, Penguins and even a yearling sub-Antartic Seal and a newly born Cape Fur Seal. We were privileged to treat & release a rare ‘Ludwig’s Bustard’ which was found in Plettenberg Bay.
