Update on Beacon Way roadworks
A meeting was held on site last week with the relevant parties present, and a decision was taken to postpone the repair of Beacon Way until early next year once the holiday traffic has subsided due to the limited time left and considering the delays experienced to date.
In the meantime, however, in order to minimise any possible risks, the contractor has been requested to proceed with the construction of the new embankment up to a point where they could no longer continue any further without excavating into the road.
For the embankment works, the contractor needed to access the site from above, and therefore the section of Beacon Way (between Salmack and Main Street) was closed on November 13 and would remain closed until Friday November 30.
Unfortunately the nature of the repair is such that there is no method to maintain traffic through Beacon Way while the earthworks are underway.
The contractor has indicated that they would attempt to expedite the embankment works over the next two weeks and if all went well, open the road for traffic earlier, by Friday November 23 if possible.
However, this depends on a number of factors including inclement weather or any other delays between now and November 30.
According to Bitou Municipality, they were determined to minimise inconvenience and to this end, accepted a quote from the most credible road construction company which could adhere to the time constraints and “do the best job”.
