Two Plett grocery stores close for covid 19 sanitation
Two Plettenberg Bay grocery chain stores were forced to close their doors for sanitation and screening of staff on Sunday 28 June after employees tested positive for Covid-19.
The two stores affected are Beacon Isle Kwikspar and Market Square Shopping Centre Pick ‘n Pay.
Kwikspar owner Duncan Brown said in a statement that despite diligently implementing health and safety measures, which include daily staff screening, temperature checks for all staff, social distancing markers, regular deep cleaning and sanitizing, screens at tills and hand sanitisers at the doors and till points, a staff member tested positive for Covid-19 on Saturday night.
The staff member had already been self-isolating before the results became available. “All first contacts will automatically be isolated for 14 days and we will continue to screen all staff every day as we have been doing,” Duncan said.
“The wellbeing of our staff and customers remain our number one priority and, in this regard, we have decided to temporarily close our store today (Sunday), so local doctors can conduct screening on all staff and defog the entire business. We have contracted a company to do deep clean, sanitising and defog the entire store.”
After meeting health department requirements, the store was reopened at 11:00.
In the meantime, the Market Square Shopping Centre announced that Pick ‘n Pay would be closed on Sunday after an employee tested positive too.
“Despite following very strict health and safety protocols, including till screens, sanitisers at the door and at the tills, social distancing and masks, a member of staff at Pick ‘n Pay has tested positive. The store will be closed today (Sunday) for fogging and sanitising. The safety of staff and customers at The Market Square is of paramount importance to us all,” the shopping centre said in a statement.
