Turtle hatchlings wash up on Plett’s coastline
A total of seven turtle hatchlings have washed up along Plett’s coastline in the past 24 hours, so please keep your eyes peeled for these little guys in the next few weeks.
Stranded turtles aren’t rescued by professionals, they are rescued by people just like you. Here’s how you can save a distressed turtle if you find one on your next beach visit:
- Don’t put it back in the water!
- Contact Ocean Blue Adventures Plett Animal Stranding hotline on 079 463 4837 or Nature’s Valley Trust on 072 317 2280 or visit Tenikwa Wildlife Rehabilitation and Awareness Centre for assistance,
- Put the turtle in a dry container, with a soft towel and air holes,
- Keep the turtle out of the sun and wind.
Once the stranding network has these turtles in their care, they can immediately arrange for lifts for them to get through to the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town, where they need to be rehabilitated and strengthened, before being released back into warmer offshore waters.
