Turtle Hatchling Season is underway
Turtle hatchling season is underway along the Plett coastline, with the first hatchling recently observed at Solar Beach. Residents are encouraged to be vigilant during beach walks, as these miniature turtles are often comparable in size to a car key.
It is critical not to return the hatchlings to the water. According to Plett Shark Spotters, these hatchlings do not naturally inhabit our temperate coastline. Typically, endangered loggerhead and occasionally leatherback turtles hatch in the warmer waters of KwaZulu-Natal. They usually join the Agulhas current, drifting southward. However, strong south-easterly winds and turbulent seas can misdirect them, causing the fragile hatchlings to become stranded in our cooler Cape waters where they suffer from shock, dehydration, or injury.
If you come across a hatchling, whether alive or deceased, please contact the Plett Marine Stranding Hotline immediately at 079 4634837.
