Tik merchant nabbed in Plettenberg Bay bust
A Nigerian man was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment after he was convicted in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate’s Court last week for dealing in drugs.
Kennet Okafor took his place in the dock on 26 April and was found guilty of dealing in tik in December 2016.
He was arrested during an intelligence-driven operation in Plettenberg Bay after the vehicle he was travelling in, a Volkswagen Amarok, was pulled over and searched.
He was sentenced to 12 years behind bars, of which five years were suspended for five years on condition that he is convicted on a similar charge during this period. The magistrate took into consideration that the accused was incarcerated for more than two years after his bid to be released on bail, failed in 2016.
In addition to the sentence, the accused’s Amarok, valued at R380 000, was seized by the Anti-forfeiture Unit (AFU).
“This double blow will hopefully deter future and potential drug dealers to enter this lucrative drug trade,” Western Cape police commissioner Lieutenant-General Khombinkosi Jula said.
He also commended those involved in the initial bust as well as the successful investigation done by the provincial detectives from organised crime, investigations and narcotics based in George.
“Dealing and trafficking of drugs is quite lucrative, but illegal, business in our country. Many a dealer or trafficker thinks that he or she can get away with such action. However, concerted efforts by our members ensure that that is not the case at all,” Southern Cape police spokesman Malcolm Pojie said.
