Three nabbed for battery theft
Observant police officers not only stopped a group of alleged thieves in their tracks but also recovered specialised batteries worth more than R120 000.
Plettenberg Bay police spokesperson Captain Marlene Pieterse said three local detectives were heading to the office during the early hours of the morning on 8 August following a tracing operation in the Crags, when they noticed a suspicious vehicle near the entrance of the Vodacom tower in the Keurbooms area.
The detectives – Captain Martin Theunissen, Warrant Officer Andrew Isaacs and Sergeant Edwin Smith – immediately turned back to investigate and noticed two men standing behind the vehicle, a Nissan Hardbody with an Eastern Cape registration number, and one behind the wheel.
“They also discovered eight small and two big Vodacom batteries on the back of the bakkie,” Pieterse said.
The two suspects outside of the vehicle attempted to run away when the officers approached, but the detectives managed to stop them in their tracks and arrested all three.
Upon further investigation, they also discovered that the tower’s entrance chain had been cut and the main door to the building had been forced open.
The value of the batteries is about R120 000 and the police opened a case of burglary.
The suspects appeared in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate’s Court on 12 August and the case was postponed until 30 August for a formal bail application.
