Thieves nabbed after high speed chase
Cooperation between various crime fighters in Plettenberg Bay and beyond its borders led to the recovery of “thousands of rands’ worth of stolen goods” on Monday.
The town’s crime prevention association (PBCPA) operations head Otto Olivier said a voice note from a local security officer came through on the Plett Watch WhatsApp group about the suspicious behaviour of three men and two women pushing a trolley containing several boxes in the Market Square shopping centre parking area.
The message was passed on to the PBCPA reaction group and members immediately responded.
The men and women were seen loading the boxes in a white Volkswagen vehicle before leaving the shopping centre and heading towards Port Elizabeth on the N2.
Olivier said several PBCPA members gave chase, but because the suspects travelled at a very high speed, local police were requested to close the Tsitsikamma tollgate.
“Unfortunately this could not be done timeously and the suspects slipped through the tollgate,” Olivier said. While pursuing the suspects, Olivier contacted the Storms River police as well as Smhart Security Jeffreys Bay – an inter-town tactical response partner of the PBCPA – to assist. The vehicle was pulled over near Bluelilies Bush in the Tsitsikamma area.
“The suspects were found in possession of thousands of rands’ worth of stolen goods from Ackermans in Plett. It is suspected the suspects moved around in the store with trolleys with boxes – lined to prevent scanners picking up anti-theft locks – with bags on top,” said Olivier. Store management opened a case of theft and Storms River police arrested the suspects and will be investigating the matter.
