The New District Mayor Marais Kruger
Marais Kruger of the Democratic Alliance (DA) was elected as the new District Mayor this morning at around 11:30.
His election follows the resignation of Andrew Stroebel, who served his last day in office on October 31. The voting occurred via secret ballot. DA Councillor Koos Malooi has been appointed as the new whip of the council.
In his first address to the council as mayor, Marais expressed his readiness for the responsibilities ahead. He mentioned he took a jog last weekend to clear his mind and prepare for this new chapter.
Marais emphasized the importance of collaboration among council members to effectively serve the community.
He received 19 votes, securing a decisive victory against the ANC’s candidate, Stephen de Vries, who received 7 votes.
