Suspected copper thieves nabbed in Plett
Four men were arrested and more than 160kg of copper was recovered in Plettenberg Bay on Monday 26 July during a crime combatting effort by Eden police.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies said that officers from the Eden Cluster Crime Combatting Team conducted vehicle searches along the N2 near Plettenberg Bay on Monday evening. At about 19:30 they pulled over a Toyota Quantum minibus travelling to George.
“Upon searching the vehicle, police found two containers with copper [164kg] and a bolt cutter in the vehicle,” Spies said.
Police confiscated the items and arrested the driver and three passengers.
The four men, aged between 31 and 47, are expected to appear in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of suspected stolen property this week.
Western Cape police management lauded the officers for the arrests. “This is in line with priorities to bring perpetrators involved in theft of non-ferrous metal and damage to essential infrastructure to book.”
