Wimpie Ackermann a Formidable Contender

The 36th Six Gun Grill Trans Agulhas Challenge, powered with pride by Iconic Mossel Bay, lived up to its reputation as the world’s toughest inflatable boat race. Taking place from December 28 to December 31, 2024, the event saw 40 two-man crews brave the waves along the Southern and Western Cape coast. Among the competitors was Wimpie Ackermann, who marked his 30th year of participation in this iconic race.

Ackermann, a stalwart in the sport, teamed up with co-pilot Devon Henning to represent the title sponsor, Six Gun Grill.

Racing under their banner, Ackermann once again proved why he’s considered a titan in the inflatable boat racing scene. Earlier in the year, he claimed the Pro Stock title at the World Championships off the Gqeberha coast and secured the coveted King of the Waves title at the Six Gun Grill event in Blouberg. With such accolades, expectations were high for his performance during the Trans Agulhas Challenge.

The race began at Plettenberg Bay’s Hobie Beach and spanned six stages across a grueling 700km route. The first stage covered 188.5km to Mossel Bay, followed by an 86km stretch to Stilbaai on Day 2. Stage 3 took racers 161km from Stilbaai to Struisbaai, and the final day saw a 223km three-tiered challenge leading to the finish line at Strand Beach. Throughout the journey, Ackermann’s skill and endurance were displayed, earning admiration from spectators and fellow racers alike.

Despite the unpredictable weather conditions that have become synonymous with the event, Ackermann and Henning navigated the treacherous waters with precision and determination. The fleet’s upgraded safety measures, including three large semi-rigid safety boats, ensured that all stages were completed successfully, further solidifying the race’s reputation as the ultimate test of resilience and teamwork.

Ackermann’s extensive experience and recent successes positioned him as a formidable contender throughout the race. Ultimately, he and Henning performed admirably, securing 5th place overall in the highly competitive field, a testament to their dedication and skill.
