Want a Challenge? To Hell and Back Mountain Bike Race
While “Hulle Weet Nie Wat Ons Weet Nie” may have gained fame through the Springboks and Dricus du Plessis, it perfectly encapsulates the spirit of those who embark on the To Hell and Back pilgrimage.
Three decades have passed since the inaugural race in 1995 ignited South Africa’s passion for stage race mountain biking. The journey in and out of Gamkaskloof, affectionately known as Die Hel, continues to be a cherished adventure for seasoned riders.
The race’s allure thrives on word of mouth, a preference embraced by EcoBound Adventures. They prioritize simplicity and authenticity, steering clear of pretentiousness while maintaining a boutique experience.
A Celebration of Resilience: To Hell and Back Mountain Bike Race
However, To Hell and Back is far from a bare-bones affair. Over 30 editions, coupled with the unpredictable Swartberg weather, have refined the race’s offerings, emphasizing the essential elements that define it.
For 2024, participants can expect a vibrant campsite nestled along the Oshoekshangrivier, complete with cottages and upgraded luxury tents. Riders will have access to three well-stocked water points, cold beers, a traditional braai, and exceptional coffee—all set against a backdrop of remote wilderness. The race is set to take place on November 16 and 17, 2024, delivering everything true mountain bikers desire without unnecessary fanfare.
“To Hell and Back is the original South African stage race,” Zane Schmahl from EcoBound Adventures remarked. “It has weathered trends, wildfires, floods, and even a pandemic, yet it still draws a dedicated core of riders. It embodies the idea that ‘if you know, you know.’ While it might not be on the radar of many newcomers, we cherish its status as a reunion for industry veterans and avid mountain bikers.”
The charm of To Hell and Back extends to its communal dining experience—participants cook their own dinners. “In Die Hel, you braai your own supper, but we’ve made things easier; you no longer need to pitch your own tent,” Schmahl chuckled. “It’s part of our ethos. Safari Braai provides the braai drums, we ignite the fires and maintain the perfect coals, allowing riders to reflect on Day 1 while grilling their meat to perfection.”
The 29th edition in 2023 ventured deeper into Gamkaskloof than ever, expanding the route to 75 kilometers each day while introducing riders to the kloof’s most inviting campsite, Boplaas.
“The new race village at Boplaas is fantastic,” Schmahl noted. “Situated by a small river, it features lush green lawns and ample accommodation options, including cottages and luxury canvas tents for those looking to upgrade.”
For the EcoBound team, this annual pilgrimage into Die Hel is a highlight of the year, and they eagerly anticipate hosting around 150 riders and their families, fostering a close-knit atmosphere.
After extensive repairs to the road leading into Die Hel following April’s floods, the route is in better shape than in 2023. “We plan to do a recce into Die Hel on October 19 and 20 to finalize our logistics,” Schmahl confirmed. “Stay tuned to our social media for updates on the route and a sneak peek at the Boplaas campsite.”
Riders participating in the 30th edition will receive a custom CIOVITA To Hell and Back t-shirt, along with support from sponsors like Squirt Cycling Products, GU Energy, Sugar Bird Coffee, and Safari Braai.
Due to the remote nature of the route, live updates during the race will not be available. However, participants can engage in the pre- and post-race excitement by following @ridetohellandback on Instagram or liking the To Hell and Back Facebook page.
