Plett’s Gymnastics Sensation Heads to UK
Amidst overwhelming community support, Plettenberg Bay’s gymnastic sensation, Leolin Petersen, is set to grace the international stage at the Gymnastics Federation (FIG) World Championships in Birmingham, UK, this November.
A dream nurtured by her community and supporters has transformed into reality, leaving her mother, Helen Bezuidenhout, deeply moved.
“Words fail to convey my gratitude to everyone who has made her dream a reality. The unity and generosity displayed have left me in awe,” she shared.
Leolin, an alumna of Plettenberg Bay Primary from New Horizons, faced the daunting task of raising R80,000 to cover expenses including flights, accommodation, transport, meals, competition fees, travel insurance, and her gymnastics gear. Undeterred by financial challenges, her family, friends, and the community rallied together. Through innovative initiatives like food sales, sponsorships, and crowdfunding, they ensured Leolin’s journey to the championship.
This prestigious international competition not only marks a significant milestone but also serves as a qualifying event for the 2024 Olympic Games and the 2025 World Games. For Leolin, it’s a step closer to her lifelong dream of participating in the 2024 Olympics.
Remarkably, Leolin secured her spot not only in the South African team for her age group but also in the senior team. Alongside seven other talented gymnasts from Mandy’s School of Tumbling and Trampoline, she qualified under the mentorship of esteemed coaches Mandy Zoonekynd and Lee Budler.
Currently residing in Gqeberha and attending Framesby High School for proximity to her coaches, Leolin continues to exhibit her prowess. Recently, she dominated the annual Gymnastics South National Championships, the Gym Games, in Gauteng. Her exceptional performance earned her gold medals in Euro trampoline, tumbling, and synchro in the 17- to 21-year-olds category. Additionally, she clinched gold in the senior division’s double-mini trampoline, showcasing her unparalleled talent.
Leolin’s journey has been further adorned with victories at the Eastern Province trampoline and tumbling trials in Gqeberha, where she secured three gold medals in tumbling, double-mini, and Euro trampoline. Her remarkable achievements continued with gold wins in double-mini and Euro trampoline at the final leg of the Madiba Cup in Mossel Bay. She further solidified her position with three gold medals in senior women’s double-mini trampoline, junior women’s trampoline, and junior women’s power tumbling during the series in Cape Town.
The outpouring of support for Leolin is tangible, evident in the sold-out tickets for a fundraising dinner in her hometown, aiming to sponsor her pocket money during her stay in England. With every achievement, she not only enriches her own journey but also inspires her community, proving that dreams, when supported by a united community, can indeed become a glorious reality.
