Plettenberg Bay Teen Breaks Fishing Records
Plettenberg Bay Teen Breaks Fishing Records

15-year-old Owen Lineker from Plettenberg Bay has set both South African and All-Africa junior records with a 5.9kg red stumpnose (Chrysoblephus gibbiceps), caught during the Junior Bottom Fish Nationals U16 earlier this year.
- The Catch: Landed off the Gqeberha coast using a squid head bait, an 8-foot Kingfisher rod, KP reel, and 20kg braid. The fish fought for 10 minutes before Owen secured it with a circle hook rig.
- Record Leap: His catch beat the previous junior record of 4.9kg by a full kilogram.
- Verification: Weighed on a calibrated scale and confirmed after five months as both national and continental records.
- Background: Owen has been fishing since preschool and regularly targets red stumpnose, prized for their rarity and fighting spirit.
- Future Goals: With this achievement, Owen aims to become a Protea angler and represent South Africa internationally.
