Netball World Cup Trophy Tours the Western Cape Province
Netball World Cup Trophy Tour Celebrates South Africa’s Indigenous People in Western Cape Province
In anticipation of the upcoming Netball World Cup (NWC2023) in Cape Town, the official Trophy Tour reached a significant milestone on Monday. After traveling across the country for the past month, the renowned trophy made its way from the Eastern to the Western Cape provinces of South Africa. The Western Cape serves as the final destination before it is presented to the NWC2023 champions during the crowning ceremony on August 6.
The handover of the trophy held special meaning as it took place at the Tsitsikamma Khoisan Village, paying tribute to the indigenous inhabitants of South Africa. The Khoikhoi and San communities are believed to represent some of the oldest cultures in the world.
Aside from its breathtaking beaches, the Tsitsikamma region is known for its captivating tourist attractions, including the magnificent Bloukrans Bridge, home to one of the highest bungee jumps globally, and the Tsitstikamma Canopy Tours, allowing visitors to explore the Outeniqua Yellowwood trees, some of which are up to 700 years old.
Following a joyful celebration in Kareedouw, featuring esteemed dignitaries, cultural groups, and captivating performances by local entertainers on Monday, the NWC trophy was presented to Anroux Marais, the Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, by Nonceba Kontsiwe, the Eastern Cape MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture, at the Tsitsikamma Khoisan Village.
“The Western Cape Government is delighted and honored to receive this trophy and embark on a province-wide tour to ignite enthusiasm among all communities for the Netball World Cup,” said Marais.
“Cape Town is fully prepared and eagerly anticipates hosting the Netball World Cup for the first time on African soil. Although the matches will be held in Cape Town, we aim to involve the entire province in the lead-up and the actual tournament. We are thrilled to have various municipalities partnering with us to establish fan zones and viewing centers, ensuring that people throughout the province can watch the live matches free of charge at venues close to their homes.”
“During this trophy tour, we will encourage people to join us at these venues to support our home team and ensure that everyone feels included,” Marais added.
The NWC2023 will take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from July 28 to August 6, 2023, featuring 16 teams from around the world competing for top honors. Detailed information on tickets, travel packages, and more can be found on the official tournament website (www.nwc2023.org.za), with a wide range of tickets and packages still available for purchase.
