Local Athletes Shine at Eastern Cape’s Premier Fitness Fest
Local athletes made a strong impression at what has become the largest fitness festival in the Eastern Cape. The Fittest in PE (FiPE) CrossFit competition took place at the Sun Park Arena in Gqeberha from September 27 to 29, attracting participants from across the country.
Competitors battled for the coveted title in a variety of disciplines, including weightlifting, gymnastics, functional fitness, and general fitness tests. Among the standout performances was Simthembile Notshulwana from CrossFit Plett, who secured third place in the beginner male category. Additionally, athletes from CrossFit Plett dominated the male teen division for ages 16 to 17, with James Coetzee finishing in second place and Matthew Lancaster rounding out the podium in third.
Proud of the Team
“I’m incredibly proud of every team member at CrossFit Plett. Each individual delivered an outstanding performance. We had a blend of seasoned competitors and newcomers, and everyone excelled,” said Donald Ravenscroft, owner of CrossFit Plett. “This success stems from the hard work and dedication that each athlete has shown over the past few months.”
Hard Work and Goal-Setting
Ravenscroft emphasized that while the idea of success stemming from hard work may seem like a cliché, it is genuinely evident in their team’s performance. “Our athletes’ achievements are not solely the result of physical exertion; they stem from several key factors,” he noted.
One significant element contributing to their success is their structured approach to goal-setting. “Every four to five months, we conduct thorough goal-setting sessions with each athlete, whether they are newcomers or veterans. We discuss their aspirations for the next three, six, or even twelve months, and we look ahead to the next two years. This process creates a clear and structured path for them to follow.”
Focus Beyond Competition
Ravenscroft also acknowledged that not all members aim to compete; many seek to improve their overall fitness for daily life. “This clarity in goal-setting instills focus and purpose in their training. When people understand their ‘why,’ they are more likely to stay committed,” he explained.
Consistency is Key
Another critical aspect of their philosophy is consistency. “Fitness isn’t achieved overnight; it’s the result of sustained effort over time,” Ravenscroft stated. “We adopt a holistic view of health, emphasizing the importance of not just training, but also nutrition, sleep, and overall lifestyle. Our goal is to encourage our members to eat well, sleep well, and cultivate healthy relationships with their bodies and fitness journeys.”
Ultimately, Ravenscroft believes these factors contributed significantly to their athletes’ success at FiPE. “The results are a testament not only to the efforts of the past few weeks but also to the cumulative dedication of the last several months.”
