Gymnast Leolin Petersen Takes World Stage
Plettenberg Bay’s gymnastics sensation, Leolin Petersen, is poised to showcase her talents on the global stage as she competes at the Gymnastics Federation (FIG) World Championship, commencing on November 9th.
This 17-year-old alumna of Plett Primary School has worked tirelessly, dedicating long hours to training and garnering immense support from her community.
Having successfully secured her place in Birmingham, UK, Leolin not only represents South Africa in her age group but is also an integral part of the senior team. The FIG World Championship holds significant prestige, serving as a crucial qualifying event for both the 2024 Olympic Games and the 2025 World Games. For Leolin, this competition marks a significant stride towards realizing her lifelong dream—participating in the 2024 Olympic Games.
Hailing from New Horizons, Leolin faced the challenge of raising a substantial amount, R80,000, to cover various expenses including flights, accommodation, transport, meals, competition entry, travel insurance, and her gymnastics kit. Thanks to the unwavering support from her family, friends, and community, she successfully raised funds through initiatives such as food sales, sponsorships, and crowdfunding.
The community rallied behind her, exemplified by the efforts of establishments like Moby’s Seafood Grill and Deck and Melville’s Spar, who stepped in during times of urgency, ensuring that Leolin’s journey remained uninterrupted.
With the financial hurdles overcome, Leolin and her teammates embarked on their journey to the UK. Settling in Birmingham before the competition, Leolin expressed a mix of excitement and nervousness. Her excitement stems from the opportunity to compete in the senior team for the first time, yet the competition promises to be intense, featuring former world champions.
Undeterred, Leolin is determined to give her all, channeling a lifetime of preparation into this momentous event.
