“Griqua Rider: Nicole Jacobs’ Equestrian Odyssey”
Introducing Nicole Jacobs, the Proud “Griqua Rider”
Nicole Jacobs, a 21-year-old hailing from Kranshoek in Plettenberg Bay and currently residing in Cape Town, proudly identifies herself as the “Griqua rider,” representing the Griqua Nation with deep pride.
The journey of the Griqua people, like any other cultural community, has seen challenges in establishing a sense of belonging within society. Nicole emphasizes the importance of celebrating the history of Kranshoek riders, stating, “Without their history, we would not have a future. The lessons learned from the past provide us with the knowledge to pursue new opportunities.”
The Griqua Heritage Herd, named after the Griqua community, gained recognition and support through the involvement of Lee Plociennik, who helped establish the herd under the African Hoofprint Foundation. This involvement enabled the Kranshoek riders, including Nicole, to participate in shows. Nicole’s passion for horses has been a constant in her life, as she expresses, “I have always had a passion for horses from a young age; I have always loved them.”
In 2018, when the South African Lipizzaners visited Plettenberg Bay, Nicole was captivated. Witnessing the dancing white stallions, she was eager to learn more. With the guidance of Lee Plociennik, Nicole applied for the South African Lipizzaner FirstRand Youth Development Program, leading her to relocate to Cape Town, where the program is based at the Mistico Equestrian Centre.
The South African Lipizzaner Centre, an NPO located outside Paarl, is a distinguished equestrian establishment preserving Lipizzaner horses and upholding classical dressage principles and traditions of the Ecole. Nicole’s instructor, Jhan-Mari van den Berg, emphasizes the harmonious connection between horse and rider showcased in their performances, constituting a unique cultural experience.
Nicole’s journey reflects the strength that comes with pursuing one’s passion. Her love for horse riding, initially sparked within the Griqua Heritage Herd, led her to brave the move to Cape Town. Nicole acknowledges the support and guidance from the South African Lipizzaner, FirstRand Youth Development, Lee Plociennik, and her family, expressing gratitude for the opportunities afforded to her.
In closing, Nicole extends a massive thank you to those who supported and guided her. Her story serves as an inspiration, particularly for the youth of Kranshoek and Plettenberg Bay. Truly, Nicole Jacobs is a beacon of inspiration for all.
