Spellbinding Victory for Colin Coetzee Sanlam WOW Spelfees

In a dazzling display of linguistic prowess, Colin Coetzee, a brilliant Grade 9 student from Plettenberg Bay Secondary School, stole the spotlight at the prestigious Sanlam WOW Spelfees festival. Despite facing initial setbacks last year, Colin made a triumphant return to the competition, clinching first place in all three tournaments and cementing his position as the top speller in his grade and category.

This remarkable journey began in 2022 when Colin, motivated by his dedicated teachers Mrs Manuel and Mrs. Maree, decided to take on the challenge.

Colin Coetzee won three medals that he obtained as top speller at the district, provincial, and national levels in the Sanlam Wow Spelfees.

The Sanlam WOW Spelfees festival, renowned for its district, provincial, and national-level competitions, became the stage where Colin’s talent shone brightly.

Undeterred by the daunting competition, Colin participated in both English and Afrikaans categories. The district-level contest kicked off on 25 August, followed by the provincial showdown on 9 September. The grand finale unfolded on 7 October at the prestigious Stellenbosch University.

Colin’s triumph was not just a victory; it was a testament to his passion for reading and languages. His exceptional performance, especially considering the challenging Grade 9 spelling list, left everyone in awe.

But Colin’s achievements didn’t stop there. He also claimed the top spot in the idiom competition held at Plettenberg Bay Secondary on 25 February, showcasing his versatility and depth of knowledge. Additionally, his dedication to academic excellence earned him recognition as a merit student in the first term of the year.

Colin attributes his success to the unwavering support of his family, teachers, and Principal Juan Jullies. “We are looking at Colin with new eyes and respect,” remarked Principal Jullies, emphasizing Colin’s exceptional abilities.

In this spellbinding tale of determination and triumph, Colin Coetzee has emerged as a shining example of excellence, leaving an indelible mark on the Sanlam WOW Spelfees festival  and that is not all, Another Grade 9 student from Plettenberg Bay Secondary, Onako Manyela, also showed an impressive 60% knowledge of the words on the spelling list.
