Some of the best to sail in Plettenberg Bay Regatta
Work behind the scenes to showcase some of South Africa’s top sailors has kicked off in earnest. In just over a month, sailors from all over the country will head down to Plettenberg Bay for the annual Robberg Fine Foods Classic Beach Regatta which takes place between 17 and 19 December.
As always it is set to take place from Plettenberg Bay’s sheltered Hobie Beach. The sight of a fleet of beautiful, multi-coloured sails in the bay has become an integral part of Plett’s festive season and one remembered by many visitors and residents as far back as their childhood.
Local business Robberg Fine Foods will once again be the main sponsor. Traditionally, sailors from across the country come to take part in this fun regatta, among them a number of Hobie national and world champions.
Spectators get to watch as the boats race “round the cans” – a set of buoys in the bay – or do a long-haul race from the mouth of the Keurbooms lagoon all the way across to Robberg 5.
“While things may look calm from the beach, they’re anything but on the water as boats jockey for position on the start line and then race each other for line honours,” organisers said.
“Hobie sailors are famously easy-going and friendly, and members of the public are welcome to come down to Hobie Beach and ‘meet the fleet’ when the boats are on the beach.” For more information or to enter, contact Blaine Dodds on 082 564 1818.
