He further said the Qolweni housing project, the slow progress of which had been the subject of a series of protests, was getting underway. “A contractor has been appointed and the site was handed over on 7 July.”

The Bitou mayoral committee has its hands full with several projects underway to improve the Plettenberg Bay area.
Acting mayor Sandiso Gcabayi said during a mayco meeting on 22 July that one of the projects being launched was “bush clearing” in various wards over the coming weeks.
“This project will see alien bushes being cleared as there are often causes of fires and criminals use these as a haven for unholy activities,” he said, adding that the project would also create a number of temporary jobs.

Other service delivery progress in the Qolweni, Bossiesgif and Pinetrees areas includes the connection of electricity at the Bossiesgif sports field as well as the construction of changing rooms at the grounds. Electricity was also connected for the temporary relocation areas (TRAs) in Qolweni. Construction of community toilets had commenced in Bossiesgif and Qolweni while trenching for fibre-optic cables had begun in the Plett industrial area and Bossiesgif.

Another housing project gaining momentum is the handing over of emergency housing units to various beneficiaries across Bitou. These were donated by the Department of Human Settlements following a series of fires in 2019.
Some units have been handed over to selected beneficiaries in Covie, Kurland, New Horizons, Kranshoek and Kwanokuthula. “More units still have to be handed out.”
Several upgrades for the area are also on the cards. Gcabayi said Redford Road in the Crags is due for an upgrade and this has been budgeted for.
“This will see the entrance road to Kurland and the Groot River Pass benefit from this project. Job opportunities for people of Covie and Kurland will be derived from this. The contractor has been appointed and is currently in the process of recruiting a community liaison officer for the project.”
Gcabayi said the beautification of the Plettenberg Bay’s waste transfer station in Kwanokuthula is also progressing well. This includes grass being planted along the N2.
