It has been reported that there are concerns within the community regarding the safety of and shelter for workers who control the traffic at night. Whiles ladies might be used at night at the Stop / Go control points (which have a shelter), every effort is made to use men only where traffic control is required between Stop / Go control points. Further, security is provided for all staff working at night. It must be kept in mind that the purpose of the flag-men between the Stop / Go points is to control the traffic, something that they would not be able to do effectively from within a shelter resulting in potential danger to road users.
It might be of interest to know that the contractor’s average monthly wage bill for the local community for the past 3 months is R 875 000 which makes a significant positive contribution to their lives. Some potholes have occurred in a newly upgraded section of road but all damaged sections will be reconstructed before the road is accepted as complete.
