Remarkable Rescue Effort Preserves Unique Knysna Seahorse
In a heartening tale of community collaboration, residents of Plett recently joined forces to save the iconic Knysna seahorse (Hippocampus capensis), a creature steeped in myth, magic, and fable. What sets this seahorse apart is not just its legendary status, but its unique habitat—unlike nearly 40 other seahorse species found worldwide, the Knysna seahorse is exclusively located in river estuaries, not the open ocean.
This fascinating creature, endemic to the Garden Route area of the Western Cape, resides in only three estuarine systems: the Swartvlei in Sedgefield, Knysna, and Keurbooms in Plettenberg Bay. Once, these seahorses inhabited a broader range, including estuaries like Klein Brak, Groot Brak, Goukamma, Groot, Kromme, Kabeljous, and Gamtoos. However, they have not been observed in these systems for many years, emphasizing the importance of preserving their existing habitats.
The recent rescue operation, orchestrated by dedicated locals, not only safeguarded a national treasure but also protected one of the 40 known seahorse species globally that reside in river estuaries. The Knysna seahorse, measuring a mere 12cm, faced a precarious situation due to natural events. The flood, which flushed them out of river mouths during low tide, posed a significant threat to their survival.
Remarkably, the community’s swift action ensured the safe collection of 1,004 seahorses, with 706 individuals successfully released back into their natural habitat. This remarkable feat highlights the significance of preserving these unique creatures, which are rare and vital for maintaining the delicate balance of their estuarine ecosystems.
The rescued seahorses were returned to their specific estuarine systems, including the Swartvlei, Knysna, and Keurbooms, where they find refuge and sustenance in eelgrass beds. The efforts of the community, coupled with the seahorses’ resilience, have provided a beacon of hope for the preservation of this extraordinary species.
